My FAVORITE Acoustic Guitar PICKUP — Less than $150
On a recent Livestream Q&A, I was asked about my favorite acoustic guitar pickup system. It's the K&K Pure Mini: inexpensive, and it sounds great in all sorts of performance environments. I've even used it in recording studios - blended with the sound of a good mic or two.

COMPING with SHELL Voicings (for JAZZ Guitar)
Переглядів 5407 годин тому
In the middle of a recent UA-cam live stream, a viewer named Andy asked me to show how I might comp through the jazz standard "Fly Me to the Moon". This video excerpt was my reply. If this sort of thing interests you, check out my Patreon channel, Guitar Tips Pro. I've got lots of material on chords and shell-voicings there - with PDFs and some backing tracks as well. Here's an insightful conversation with jazz guitarist Sean McGowan, from 2022. Primarily a solo guitarist, he had some fresh considerations - technically and sonically - when he recorded his organ-trio album 'Union Station'. In this conversation, he shares what he learned along the way. Website: seanmcgowanguitar.com/ Bandcamp: seanmcgowan2.bandcamp.com/ TrueFire: truefire.com/educators/sean-mc...

Two-Line GUITAR Improv (COUNTERPOINT)
Did you actually have a metallurgy class in high school, Adam?😂
I just installed an Ultra Tonic pick up on my Gibson L-OO. Like the K&K it does not require a battery, but there is a volume knob in the sound hole. Then I run it through a line 6 helix, compress it,cut out a bunch of 250 and 500 K,add some 343 ms modulated delay and little plate reverb and then I start to sound semi OK 😆. Really enjoy your videos and you’re playing. Thank you.
I’m using the new Baggs HiFi on a guitar but I have used the Baggs Lyric and the K&K pickups. Any of those is better than the under saddle tech of 30 years ago. My latest thing is I watched the Alex Price video of how to make IR captures of my acoustic instruments and with a $59 IR pedal I have a guitar that sounds mic’d up and is way less brittle and harsh than any pickup I’ve ever heard live.
The pure mini is a really popular pick up with good reason… I believe the three transducers are actually crazy glued in place so best to try one out before installing lol
True enough.
Thanks for your video , It's useful :')
Glad to hear that!
Really helpful .. helps reinforce the principles of your last through-line about the melody being the anchor
Thanks so much. I've been looking for this very thing.
I’m glad you found it!
Oh, that's my question!) Thank you very much, Adam! It was very helpful for me. I've almost learned it) But one question remains: what did you play at 1:59 ? How is this approach to Em7 explained? Just chromatic minor chords?
I walk B7 chromatically up to Em: B7 - A/C# - A#/C# - B/D#; then Em7; then G#º7 approaching Am7. Know what I mean?
@@AdamLevyGuitarTips Yes, sure). I've often seen this move in common jazz comp and just wanted to make sure I understand it correctly :)
Very nice!
Wow ! I wish I was there live 🙏🙏🙏🙌🙌🙌
Building blocks....So good. Such a smart way to teach this
The solo in The Story is a totally ripping solo that really does compliment the way Brandi and her voice breaks up. The Austin City Limits performance is still one of my favorite live recordings of a band, next to the Alison Krauss live album the band did about 20 years ago. Being fiddle player I actually have had to force myself sometimes to not just totally ape the vocal as my solo and instead find ornaments and things that give a bit more “candy” to my playing. I remember my first few gigs in a swing band where the band leader told me “they just heard that. Play something else” 😂 so I learned to play the melody with a triple shuffle bowing or something to sort of big it up. Same melody just harder and more edgy.
Candy. That's good!
@@AdamLevyGuitarTips candy, or as one producer I did some tracks for said “put some BBQ on it” when he actually meant to push the time and add some drive.
🤘🤘🤘
Two of my favorite dudes. Love the convo!
I use voice memos all the time to great success Two hints to make using memos more effective: 1. give it a weird ass temporary name 2. After the name (as part of the name) include and relevant forgettable details (capo5, Em9-Cmaj7, etc)
Excellent tips.
@@AdamLevyGuitarTips naming ideas is a great way to help remember them, in general. Even if they are likely to change. “That’s the one we were calling “Chicken Puke (or “Lick My Love Pump)?” “Yeah, now it’s called “If Only You Loved Me”
The two best on the 'Tube!
These first few remarks on playing with Nora for me are actually about getting in a zone, a way of thinking/ state of mind a good bassist would take live. Or any studiomusician just before a recording when they go through te song a few times. Great conversation!
Adam, you should not do this.
Hmm. Why?
@@AdamLevyGuitarTips because that‘s not your level.
Okay. What sorts of things do you think I should be doing?
@@AdamLevyGuitarTipsAdam, you should ignore fools who say foolish things. Thank you for this instruction and conversation. I am enjoying it very much.
Cheers, Tommy. ~A
Nuggets of gold and pearls of wisdom throughout…. More content like this please… Eric your TrueFire courses have totally change my approach to guitar and upped my game. Adam’s string theory is a must have daily inspiration. Thank you to you both!!❤
What a beautiful tone and surprising harmonic adventures…everything I want to hear in guitar music👌😁
What a lovely conversation between two of my favorite teachers.
Wow! This was very enjoyable! Thank you both!
If you haven’t heard it, listen to Adam’s record “Buttermilk Channel”. One of the coolest instrumental guitar records ever.
Thank you!
Thank you wise gentlemen🙏✌️
GOLD.. Mr Adam pure gold..
I would add "Enough said!" by Bill Jennings and "Nothing but the blues" by Herb Ellis :)
Great examples.
Thanks. Since I usually play the head chord melody style, I often forget that when soloing I don't have to be in a particular spot on the fretboard. Can make a big difference,
Definitely.
Fabulous lesson!! Thank you!
Really really helpful. I get often frustrated watching “teachers” playing “thousand” notes fast, and explain how simple their methods are. Sure, but not for me. You work and teaching is great Adam. As a bonus I always leave with a good calm vibe :-)
Nice series !
Hi Adam, You wrote « Part 2 of 4 » in the tittle in this episode 3😉
